Seven Psychopaths was written and directed by Martin McDonagh and is a star-studded film, featuring Sam Rockwell, Colin Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, and several other well-known actors. I actually went to see Seven Psychopaths last night not really knowing much about it other than it had several of my favorite actors and a very cute dog and the insistence from my daughter that it looked like it would be a lot of fun.
The plot revolves around a writer, Marty (coincidence?), an alcoholic who is having a bit of writer’s block when it comes to the screenplay he is due to complete; Billy, his best friend, who just happens to be an actor and a dog-napper; and Hans, Billy’s co-conspirator in kidnapping the dog and a character who you’ll discover has many layers; Charlie, a psychopathic mobster; and last, but not least, Bonny the Shih-Tzu.
Charlie is Bonny’s owner, and when Bonny gets stolen as part of the dog-napping ring, things take a turn that Billy and Hans were not prepared for, maybe….
I was pleasantly surprised by the film. It has a dark and twisted sense of humor with a touch of poignancy. The characters were all well-constructed and very well acted. I would not be surprised if Mr. McDonagh had these particular actors in mind as he was creating the film. It reminded me of a comedic version of a Quentin Tarantino film.
Post viewing, the audience got to participate in an Q&A with Mr. McDonagh and Linda Bright Clay (who was fantastic). I got to meet both of them and have my picture taken. They were extremely gracious and friendly, and it was a pleasure and an honor to meet them and see their film.
It is rated R for violence and A LOT of foul language, as well as brief nudity.
I am giving this 4 stars.
I can’t resist sharing my pictures!
The first one is me with the actress, Linda Bright Clay, who played Myra. She was delightful and patient and sweet as my camera/phone kept freezing.
And here I am with Martin McDonagh, the director. Isn’t he sexy! 😀
I saw this movie and liked it as well! I am a huge Christopher Walken fan!
