Affordable Escapes: Beach Vacations in the North

You don’t have to travel to the far, busy coastal areas this summer to give your family a wonderful beach vacation. If you’re craving the sun, water, and leisure you’d expect from a sandy spot, remember that there are many beautiful lakes and rivers across the U.S. that offer the same beauty and excitement without the chaos or expense. Most people forget that states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are quite pleasant in the summer, despite their bad winter reputations. Once the snow has melted, the landscape has beautiful greenery everywhere. Plus, the culture has outdoor fun and kind people that you will enjoy meeting, making this trip a truly hometown experience. Manitowoc, Wisconsin is one such place that has a lot to offer.

Family Aquatic Center

If you’re looking for the beach experience without the fear that your children will be swept away by ocean waves or encounter a loose jelly fish, the Family Aquatic Center is a great place to keep the kids contained and having fun while you and your spouse enjoy sun and relaxation. The center features a heated pool, mushroom waterfall, floor fountains, open water slide, enclosed water slide, diving board, lazy river, and a sand playground area. You can take a break from the water and build those sand castles, just like at the beach!

The Bernard Schwartz House

Designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Bernard Schwartz House is a must-see attraction. Bring a little history and education into your visit by checking out this masterpiece. In the late 1930’s, while Lloyd Wright was at the peak of his creativity and fame, he designed this Life Magazine dream house for Bernard Schwartz, a Two Rivers businessman. Tour reservations fill up quickly, so be sure to book your spot in advance.

Lake Michigan

The S.S. Badger boat is a great way to experience the water and also see the great outdoors and local community that are around the area. It sails between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan daily, carrying passengers across Lake Michigan. Your vehicle can also travel with you, in case you’d like to experience far-off adventures on the other side of the lake. Travel across and take a few days to camp at the gigantic and breathtaking Ludington State Park, which is just north of the boat landing and surrounded by Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Even further north is the Lake Michigan Recreational Area, which are large forest areas offering amazing bike trails and lots of outdoor recreation.

Took the kids to Lake Michigan last summer and we had a beautiful time! Living in the North East isn’t like having California beaches, but we have awesome beaches too! Plus freshwater lakes for great swimming & fishing!

    this is awesome =]

We always think of going South to go to the beach and forget the beautiful country we have north — thanks for reminding us

  4. I’d love to visit those states in the summer. Maine is also a very nice “northern” destination for summer. We love Ogunquit.

it gets just as warm here in Illinois as it did when i lived in Virginia… so i wouldn’t mind visiting a beach up here on one of the great lakes or something :-)

  6. Cindy B says:

This sounds like a great spot for a summer vacation. It’s so true that we tend to think of ocean and southern beaches while overlooking the lake beaches.

I have been to Wisconsin. It sounds lovely. I live just outside Boston and there many beautiful sights and activities here, as well! I hope someday I can travel and see more of this beautiful country of ours!

  8. I would love to visit it here! Thanks for the info :)

  9. I used to enjoy a beach vacation. That is until we moved to an area that is an hours drive from the beach. I guess when you live near it, it doesn’t hold the same appeal. I did enjoy your article though.

  10. I only saw Lake Michigan from the Chicago side when I lived in the midwest. I do know that upper Wisconsin offers a lot of beachy places to visit, i.e. Door County. I would love to sail on the S.S. Badger; I had no idea it existed until now.

  11. My brother lives near Manitowoc, Wisconsin and says it is beautiful! I might have to visit him soon :)

This sounds like so much fun–When you in S. Idaho, we don’t have any beaches, they are a good 10 hour drive away. But we do go every few years,.Thanks for the review sounds great
